Key characteristics:

  • Appearance: Black, rough outer skin (peridium) with pyramidal warts. The interior (globe) is dark brown to black with white marbled veins.
  • Aroma: Strong, reminiscent of tar or resin, with slight chocolate notes.
  • Size: Small to medium, usually 2–5 cm in diameter.

Habitat:
Grows underground in symbiosis with trees such as oak and beech. It is found mainly in Europe, especially in areas with limestone soils.
